How Wholesale Crawfish Pricing Works
What drives wholesale crawfish prices — season, size and grade, the weekly farm-gate market, order volume, and delivery — and how to get an accurate quote.
The short answer
Wholesale crawfish is a live, seasonal commodity, so the price moves week to week — there is no fixed list price. It's driven mainly by five things: the point in the season (short supply early and late runs higher; peak season runs lower), the size and grade of the crawfish, the weekly farm-gate market, your order volume and delivery frequency, and how far the product has to travel. A supplier prices your order against those factors at the time you buy.
Crawfish is priced by the pound, sold by the sack
Live crawfish moves in mesh sacks, and it's priced per pound. A standard wholesale sack runs around 30 to 35 pounds depending on the supplier and season, so the per-pound rate and the sack weight together determine what you actually pay per sack.
Because it's a live product, weight and count per sack can vary batch to batch. Suppliers that wash, sort, and precision-weigh every sack give you a more consistent, verifiable count than field-run product, which matters when you're costing a menu or reselling by the sack.
The five things that move the price
Season. Crawfish season in Louisiana typically runs January through July. Early and late in the season, supply is short and prices are highest; in the heart of the season, when all the acreage is producing, prices come down.
Size and grade. Larger, graded crawfish command a premium over smaller or ungraded product. Grading depends on supply — there's little grading when the catch is short, and more when supply is strong.
The weekly market. Crawfish prices reset frequently against a farm-gate market that can move week to week with weather, water conditions, and demand. A quote is good for that window, not the whole season.
Volume and frequency. Larger orders and standing, recurring routes are easier to price competitively than one-off small orders — consistent volume helps both sides plan.
Delivery. Distance from the plant and whether you're on a scheduled route (versus needing freight or air) factors into the delivered price.
Why there's no fixed price list
A published price sheet would be out of date within a week. Because crawfish is a live commodity tied to a moving market and a short season, wholesale pricing is quoted per order against current conditions and your specific volume, location, and product. That's normal for the category — it's why buyers call for a current number rather than ordering off a static price.
How to get an accurate quote fast
Have four things ready and a supplier can price you in one call: the product and rough volume (live, boiled, or tail meat, and how much per order), your delivery city, how often you'd want deliveries, and your business type. The more specific you are, the faster you get a real number instead of a range.
